Auto repair questions, answered
General
How much do brakes cost in Houston?
Front pads and rotors on most cars run about $350 to $700 for one axle, depending on the car. We measure first and send the price before we start.
Do I still need a state inspection in Texas?
Texas ended the yearly safety inspection for most passenger cars in 2025, but Harris County cars still need a yearly emissions test. Ask us and we will check your car’s due date.
How much is a check engine diagnostic?
Most shops charge about $120 to $180 to find the cause. Ours is $149, and we credit it toward the repair if you fix it with us.
What does your warranty cover?
Parts and labor for 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first, and it is honored at partner shops nationwide.
Why is my A/C blowing warm air?
Most often a small leak has let the refrigerant out. We find the leak first instead of just adding more, and your car may use the newer R-1234yf refrigerant.
Brake repair
How long do brake pads last in Houston?
Usually 30,000 to 70,000 miles. City driving and towing wear them faster. We measure them so you know how much is left.
Can I drive with grinding brakes?
It is risky. Grinding usually means the pads are gone and the rotors are being cut up. Get it checked soon.
Do I need new rotors with new pads?
Not always. If the rotors measure above minimum thickness and are smooth, they can stay. We show you the numbers.
Is the front brake inspection really free?
Yes. We look, measure and send photos. You pay only if you approve a repair.
Oil changes and maintenance
How often should I change oil in Houston?
Most newer cars with synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Check your manual, and use the lower number if you drive in heavy traffic.
Do I need synthetic oil?
Many newer engines require it. If your manual says synthetic, use it. It holds up better in Houston heat.
Can I wait while you do it?
Yes. Most oil changes take under an hour, and there is a waiting area.
What does the courtesy inspection cover?
Tires, brakes, belts, wipers, lights and fluid levels. You get photos of anything we find.
Check engine light
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If it is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually get to a shop soon. If it flashes or the car shakes, stop driving and call.
Will you just clear the code?
No. Clearing a code hides the problem and it comes back. We find the cause first.
Can a loose gas cap trigger the light?
Yes. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light stays on after a few drives, get a scan.
Will the light make me fail emissions?
Usually yes in Harris County. Fix the cause, then retest after the car runs through its drive cycle.
A/C repair
Why is my A/C blowing warm air?
Most often a small leak has let the refrigerant out. We find the leak first instead of just adding more.
How much does a car A/C recharge cost in Houston?
Usually $150 to $350, more for newer cars with R-1234yf. It depends on the leak and the car.
Is an A/C recharge a permanent fix?
Only if nothing leaks. If refrigerant escaped, it will again, so we test for leaks.
How long does an A/C repair take?
A check takes about an hour. Many repairs are same day. Compressor and evaporator jobs can take longer.
Emissions tests
Do I need a state inspection in Texas?
Most passenger cars no longer need a yearly safety inspection. Harris County cars still need a yearly emissions test.
What do I bring?
Your proof of insurance and registration. Cars from outside the county may need extra paperwork.
Why did my car fail?
Common causes are a lit check engine light, a bad oxygen sensor, a misfire or a recently cleared battery. We read the code and tell you.
Can I test and fix it the same day?
Often yes, if we have the part. We send a written price before any repair.
Battery and starting
How long does a car battery last in Houston?
Usually 3 to 5 years. Heat shortens that, so test it yearly after year three.
How do I know it is the battery and not the alternator?
If the car starts with a jump but dies soon after, the alternator is a suspect. We test both.
Can you replace it the same day?
Often yes. Common batteries are quick to swap. Special batteries may need to be ordered.
Do you recycle the old battery?
Yes. It is recycled as required.
