Generator questions, answered

General

How much does a whole-home generator cost in Houston?

Most 18 to 26 kW installs run about $12,000 to $20,000 with the transfer switch, pad, gas line and permits. These are typical ranges, not quotes. We give you a written price first.

What size generator do I need?

Most Houston homes with central AC need 18 to 26 kW for whole-home power. Smaller homes or essentials-only setups can use 10 to 14 kW. We size it with a load calculation.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. The City of Houston needs a separate electrical permit and a plumbing permit for the gas line, plus inspections. Other cities have their own rules. We pull the permits for you.

Will CenterPoint need to change my gas meter?

Often, yes. Many home meters are too small to feed a generator. After the city signs off, CenterPoint upgrades the meter. We send the paperwork and track it.

How long does it take?

Install day is usually one to two days. Survey to final inspection often takes 6 to 10 weeks, and longer after a big storm when everyone calls at once.

Whole-home generators

How long can a whole-home generator run?

On natural gas, it can run as long as gas keeps flowing. It needs oil checks during a long outage, often every few days of nonstop use.

Will it run my central AC?

Yes, if it is sized for it. Many Houston homes need 22 kW or more, or load management, to run two AC units.

Is it loud?

It sounds like a running lawn mower from a short distance. Newer units are quieter, and the city noise rules still apply.

Can I finance it?

Many owners do. We can show options, but read the terms closely before you sign.

Essential-circuit generators

Can a small generator run my AC?

One smaller AC, yes, if the unit is sized for it. A soft-start kit on the AC can help it start on a smaller generator.

Can I add more circuits later?

Often, yes. We plan the switch and wiring so it can grow.

Is essentials-only cheaper to run?

Yes. A smaller unit burns less gas per hour.

Does it still start by itself?

Yes. The transfer switch senses the outage and starts the generator.

Automatic transfer switches

What is back-feeding?

Plugging a generator into a wall outlet with a double-ended cord. It can start fires and shock utility workers. Don’t do it.

Can I use a transfer switch with a portable generator?

Yes, with a manual switch or an interlock and an outdoor inlet.

How long does switchover take?

Most automatic switches move to generator power within about 10 to 30 seconds.

Does the switch need maintenance?

Yes. We test it and check the connections at each yearly visit.

Gas lines and meter upgrades

Why does the gas meter need an upgrade?

A generator uses a lot of gas at full load. A small meter can starve it, so it surges or shuts down.

Who pays for the meter upgrade?

CenterPoint charges a fee for it. We list it on your price so you are not surprised.

How long does the meter upgrade take?

It happens after the final inspection. Wait times vary, and they grow after big storms.

Can the generator run before the meter upgrade?

It can start, but it may not carry full load. We do the final load test once the meter is in.

Generator maintenance

How often should a generator be serviced?

At least once a year, and after long outages. Check your maker’s schedule, since some list service by hours run.

Do you service brands you didn’t install?

Yes. We service most home standby brands, including Generac, Kohler and Briggs & Stratton.

Will skipping service void the warranty?

It can. Many makers expect service on schedule. Keep your records.

What should I check myself?

Look for a green status light, keep the area clear of plants and listen to the weekly exercise run.

Generator repair

Why won’t my generator start?

A weak battery is the most common cause. Low oil, low gas pressure and a tripped breaker on the unit are next.

Is the repair covered by warranty?

Maybe. We check the serial number and file the claim with the maker if it is covered.

Do you come during a storm?

We take storm calls 24/7 once it is safe to drive. Plan members are first in line.

Can a flooded generator be saved?

Sometimes. Don’t start it. We check the engine, controller and wiring first.

Cost

Why do generator prices jump after a storm?

Demand spikes, units sell out and permit and meter lines grow. Lead times can stretch for months.

Is a portable generator cheaper?

Yes, up front. But it won’t start by itself, needs gas cans and can’t safely run central AC without a switch.

What does it cost to run?

It depends on the size, the load and gas prices. A larger unit at full load burns much more gas per hour than at half load.

Are these your prices?

No. They are typical Houston ranges. Prices marked as ours come from our own price list.
